Embrace Cowboy Culture at Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering

Celebrate Durango’s ranching heritage with performances, a motorless parade, train rides & more. Spectacular autumn foliage in the mountains, beautiful fall temperatures, and cattle drives all signal it’s time for the annual Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering. the event celebrates the American cowboy and ranching culture and stories in southwest Colorado, creatively shared by more than 40 cowboy poets, storytellers, and musicians.

It’s the perfect opportunity to pull on your cowboy boots and hat, observe a really unique art form in action and enjoy all the incredible fall activities in Durango,” says Linda Mannix, coordinator of the second oldest event of its kind in the United States.

The celebration is held in Durango’s bustling downtown district and headquartered at the historic Strater Hotel, staged evening performances at the Henry Strater Theater. Known around the world, Wylie and The Wild West kick off the gathering with 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. performances featuring a blend of cowboy, swing, folk, and yodeling along with the “Mystery of El Dorado” Cowboy Theatre at Durango Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. Evening performances at Henry Strater Theater showcase several top cowboy poets and musicians from around the country and take place at 6:00 and 8:30 p.m.

Mannix advises enjoying all the great trails, attractions, and activities in the Durango area during the day on Thursday and Friday and the many Gathering happenings on Saturday before savoring dinner at the many locally-owned restaurants downtown and attending the late shows. “We have tickets still available for the late shows, with the earlier shows already or nearly sold out. The new Cowboy Comedy Revue on Saturday afternoon also promises to have people tipping their hats to the 15 performers sharing the funniest tidbits of ranch life.”

Another ticketed event on Friday with space still available is the popular Cowboy Poet Train on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The excursion runs from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., winds through the mountains and beautiful fall scenery, and features performers on every coach and a barbecue lunch at Cascade Canyon.

Free Ways to Kick Up Your Heel

There also are plenty of free ways to get into the Western spirit during the Gathering. One of the major highlights of the weekend is the large motorless Cowboy Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday with horses, riders, wagons, walkers, and even llamas and Longhorns, but no motorized vehicles.

From 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., free-themed sessions of cowboy poetry and music are being held at Strater Hotel. Anyone can jump in and perform his or her own cowboy poetry during open sessions.

Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering wraps up at the Strater Hotel with “A Cowboy and His Creator” on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.with inspirational poetry and music by many of the weekend’s performers.

For a complete schedule, tickets, performer bios, and more information call 970.749.2995 and visit www.DurangoCowboyPoetryGathering.org. Also, follow the event on Facebook.

Fall Foliage & Day Trips Near Denver

The shimmering leaves of the aspen, the quintessential Colorado tree, turn to a positively glowing shade of gold, sending locals and visitors rushing to the mountains to find the most beautiful fall foliage.

Denver has one of the longest periods of fall colors of any city in the country. That’s because there are five different climate zones within a two-hour drive of downtown Denver. Pick your elevation and you can find yourself at the height of fall colors from mid-September to mid-November. Starting in mid-September, expect to see aspens turning gold at elevations from 8,000 to 10,000 above sea level. Later in the season from October to mid-November, you can see spectacular color down in the foothills and along the plains in Denver.

Here’s a guide of where and when to go:

MID-SEPTEMBER TO EARLY OCTOBER ABOVE 9,500 FEET

Guanella Pass, located just one hour from Denver, climbs to 11,670 feet and has many high aspen groves on both sides of the pass. There are aspen groves at all elevations along the trail, offering a good chance of seeing color somewhere on the mountainsides.

LATE SEPTEMBER TO MID-OCTOBER, FROM 7,000 TO 9,000 FEET

Georgetown and Silver Plume, located approximately one hour from Denver (40 miles) are surrounded by aspen groves. An interesting way to see the fall colors is by riding the Georgetown Loop Railroad, where a vintage steam locomotive pulls passengers up the steep grade between the two towns.

The area around Lake Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne is filled with aspen groves and is just a 75-minute drive from Denver. An 18-mile paved bike path circles the pretty lake, offering mountain and fall views in every direction.

MOST OF OCTOBER, FROM 6,000 TO 8,000 FEET

Several old cemeteries near Central City have groves of aspen, and many other trees can be seen on the dirt “Oh My God Road” that runs between Central City and another old mining town, Idaho Springs.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park, located 20 miles west of Denver in the foothills (45-minute drive), has many aspen groves at lower elevations, as well as one of the best panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains.

Despite its name, several spots around Evergreen, Colorado, put on a show in autumn. Try hiking near Maxwell Falls or in Alderfer/Three Sisters Park, or drive the Lariat Loop Scenic Byway from Evergreen on Hwy. 74 to Bergen Park and back down through Golden.

EARLY OCTOBER TO MID-NOVEMBER, 5,280 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL

Selected by USA Today as one of the top five bike paths in the country, the Cherry Creek Bike Trail is a paved off-road path that follows the tree-lined creek for more than 40 miles from downtown Denver to Cherry Creek State Park.

Another 40-mile-plus bike path, the South Platte River Bike Trail, follows the South Platte River from downtown Denver to Chatfield State Park and Waterton Canyon, where it meets up with the Colorado Trail and continues 400 miles to Durango. The Colorado Trail is considered a hiking and technical mountain bike trail.

The Highline Canal meanders through Denver for more than 70 miles, and almost all of it is lined with old Cottonwood trees that turn brilliant yellow in the fall.

There are more than 200 parks in Denver city limits, many of them connected by a necklace of bike trails — and all of them will boast beautiful fall colors:

WASHINGTON PARK: Denver’s grand traditional park has two lakes, two flower gardens, and a tree-lined, two-mile gravel running path.

SLOAN’S LAKE: Denver’s largest lake offers city and mountain views and an expansive tree-covered park.

CITY PARK: Denver’s largest park is home to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Denver Zoo, several lakes, and the Mile High Trail — a running trail that follows the 5,280-foot contour so that much of the path is exactly one mile high.

Rocky Mountain National Park, about one hour and thirty minutes from Denver has many groves of high aspens around Bear Lake. There are also many high aspen groves on the way to the park on the scenic Peak to Peak Byway (Colorado Hwy. 72 and 7) from Black Hawk to Estes Park.

The MOST photographed attraction in Colorado is Maroon Bells in Aspen Colorado. If you have never been it’s a must-see Colorado Bucket List trip.

Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Colorado Things to do

June 17, 2021 By Chrissy

Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in the country and Colorado Springs holds some of the most spectacular spots of all. Millions of pictures have been taken of our region by people trying to capture the essence of this area’s stunning beauty. And while a picture is worth a thousand words, nothing compares to experiencing Colorado with your own eyes!

Colorado Springs a go-to vacation destination for locals

If you grew up in Colorado as we did, then you have probably visited at least some of the list below of Colorado Springs attractions that are celebrating a big anniversary this year.

Our kids were just as excited about staying at the Broadmoor or the Cheyenne Mountain Resort as they were about traveling out of the state. All of these attractions are a MUST DO Colorado Bucket List item so write them down and then travel South of Denver to get them crossed off the list.

Broadmoor Hotel Entry Colorado Springs CO

Like a fine wine, six Colorado Springs attractions are only getting better with age. In 2011, Cave of the Winds, Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Golden Bee, Cheyenne Mountain Resort and El Paso County will celebrate milestones ranging from 150 years to a silver anniversary. Visit the Pikes Peak region this year and commemorate these momentous occasions with various special events and exhibits. For more information, go to www.VisitCOS.com.

cog railroad colorado springs co

Pikes Peak Cog Railway – 120 years
The Cog Railway, the highest cog in the world, was built in 1891 by mattress tycoon Zalmon Simmons, a visitor to the region in the late 1880s, who envisioned a better way than a two-day mule ride to get to the top of Pikes Peak. Spencer Penrose, owner of the world-renowned Broadmoor Hotel, acquired and upgraded the cog in 1925. While the style of the railcar has changed several times over the years, the amazing experience remains the same for travelers bound for the summit of Pikes Peak. www.CogRailway.com

Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center – 75 years
The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC) opened April 20, 1936 during The Great Depression. The FAC is home to world-class art galleries, Broadway-worthy live theatre and an art school for all ages. The FAC carries the legacy of Colorado’s arts and cultural heritage. The FAC’s building is considered an architectural landmark in the Rocky Mountain region and is listed on the National Register for Historical Places. Throughout 2011, the FAC will celebrate 75 years of history with a series of events. www.CSFineArtsCenter.org

Cave of the Winds – 130 years
Cave of the Winds is celebrating 130 continuous years as a public attraction. Over the years, visitors have toured the subterranean passages exquisitely decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and helictites. Cave of the Winds is an irreplaceable natural resource of scenic, scientific, educational and historic importance. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is featuring a free exhibit of historical photographs, artifacts and memorabilia of the Cave. www.CaveOfTheWinds.com

The Golden Bee – 50 years

In 1961, The Golden Bee originally came to The Broadmoor as a collection of panels and fixtures from a 19th-century pub shipped from England and reassembled in Colorado Springs. While it has stayed true to its authentic English pub heritage, “The Bee” has established several traditions of its own: flying bee stickers, yards of ale and a sing-along piano. “The Bee” will mark its 50th Anniversary on May 27, 2011.

The Golden Bee is famous for freshly prepared pub food, and yards of the finest ales from an extensive collection of English and Irish drafts.  Enjoy a hearty selection of snacks, appetizers and the true English tradition of fish and chips, a Reuben sandwich, or a selection of pot pies as lively piano tunes fill the 19th century English Pub. Guests are encouraged to participate in the cheerful atmosphere by joining the nightly Ragtime piano beginning at 7:30 PM and the sing-along beginning at 9:30 PM nightly, and proudly wearing their own “Bee’s” that change seasonally.

Price Range: $13 – $29
Hours:
Sunday to Thursday 11:30 AM to 12 midnight
Pub menu 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Friday and Saturday 11:30 AM to 1:30 AM
Pub Menu 11:00 PM to 12 midnight.

Attire: Casual Dress – Bermuda length shorts, denim and collared shirts are suggested. Please no athletic wear, pool attire or gentlemen’s hats.

Guests can enjoy numerous activities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a private 35-acre lake, indoor and outdoor tennis, an 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye and on-site dining. www.CheyenneMountain.com

El Paso County – 150 years

Best Burgers in Denver Colorado

November 9, 2019 By Chrissy

Burgers are a staple for most red-blooded Americans’ and Denver has made a name for itself in this food group.

Where are the best burgers in Denver?

We’ve listed a few of ours below.

Among the sea of burger places in Denver, Hopdoddy Burger Bar at 1747 Wynkoop St. in the Union Station building  is a standout with their all-natural Angus burgers hand-ground every day and served on fresh-baked buttery buns, also baked in-house daily. They have moved to the top spot for us over our beloved Crave Burger.

Hopdoddy Boss Hog

For National Cheeseburger Day, forgo the expected burger with cheddar and instead pull up to the Primetime, an artisan burger with Akashi beef, truffle aioli, arugula, caramelized onions and Hopdoddy’s own housemade steak sauce. The cheese, of course, is a velvety bloom of brie cheese, a creamy balance to the smoky high-end burger. Get it with Kennebec hand cut fries or a farm-fresh salad and wash it down with craft cocktail from the inventive menu – we recommend the LoDo Sweet Tea with house made limoncello, Deep Eddy Sweet Tea vodka, fresh-made raspberry puree and a squeeze of lemon to toast the holiday. If you aren’t concerned with calories then indulge with their off-the-hook chocolate covered pretzel Nutella Milkshake. OMG, it really is to die for.

HopDoddy Burgers Union Station Denver Colorado

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse may not be known for their burgers but believe us when we tell you that you won’t be disappointed at the one’s this legendary steakhouse will cook up for you. Del Frisco’s is located in the Denver Tech Center off I-25 & Orchard is serving up their Denver Cheeseburger dressed with bacon knots on top, yes you read that right bacon knots, onions, jalapeños, tomatoes, pickles, cheddar cheese and a heaping side of french fries. Pair it with a Colorado Beer on the menu and celebrating National Cheeseburger Day at Del’s just doesn’t get any better! This special burger can be found on the bar menu.

National Burger Day in Denver

In Cherry Creek’s Del Frisco’s Grille at 100 St. Paul St. National Cheeseburger Day is a natural fit for the award-winning Grille Prime Cheeseburger. Its an ooey, gooey concoction of double meat, double cheese, and a signature Sloppy Sauce that has 38 ingredients and oozes gently into the toasty bun, twin patties and cheese blend creating a melty concoction that will knock your socks off. The two-fisted burger arrives at your table with a cone of perfectly salty fries, a tiny bottle of ketchup and is the perfect ratio of prime beef, sharp cheddar, and salty oozing goodness. A prime cheeseburger calls for a prime cocktail, and the Grille suggests the Kilt Lifter, a refreshing pick me up to perfectly accompany the burger with Hendrick’s gin and the fresh taste of St. Germain, finished with a peppery splash of Tabasco and squeeze of fresh lemon.

National Cheeseburger Day is Sunday, September 18 and what better time to catch the brand new Knockoff Burger at Punch Bowl Social at (65 Broadway. With two grass-fed hormone-free patties, comeback sauce, pickled onion, lettuce and American cheese, all on a sesame seed bun, this cheeseburger just might bring you back. Did we mention it was created by Celebrity Chef Hugh Acheson? This seasonally inspired burger from Punch Bowl Social’s scratch kitchen is filled with nostalgia. Keep that old-school feeling going and enjoy vintage arcade games, bowling, ping pong, foosball and darts along with your cheeseburger and fries.

National Burger Day in Denver

Crave Burger landed in Colorado and has made quite the splash with not only VERY unique and decadent burgers but add to that “adult milkshakes” and Christmas fries and you have a must try place that should get its spot on “Diners Drive-in’s and Dive’s” some day soon.
Check out the “Luther” burger. Yes, that’s donuts for buns!

Or check out the Drunken Onion with cabernet caramelized onions, Gruyere, Swiss, and French onion soup for dipping with sweet potato fries. Another favorite is the Christmas Fries smothered half and half with green and red chili. YUM! They actually do offer a side salad with sliced strawberries and a raspberry vinaigrette that’s very good in place of the fries.

Parker Garage

If you are out south of Denver Metro we highly recommend the grass-fed beef burger at Parker Garage. It is served with fries that you can bump them up to truffle fries or opt for a salad dressed lightly in their house vinaigrette. This locally owned an operated spot has other fabulous food as well and has a unique history of being the “Parker Garage” back in the early 1900’s, being renovated into a restaurant called “The War Horse” from the 80’s when the building was bought by the current owners and husband and wife team Brent & Meghan who wanted to bring the bones of the building back to its origins. Parker Garage is a Chef driven culinary-inspired restaurant located right in the heart of downtown Parker. It has been designated as a Parker landmark and was restored back to its original state in 2014. Executive Chef, Duy Pham, has been an innovator in Denver’s dining scene for over 25 years. His intention based menu unites refined dining and local seasonal ingredients.

One of the most beautiful and romantic spots to vacation in Colorado lies just one hour South of Denver.

The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs Colorado

Couples will find a plethora of activities, fine and casual dining and fun to be had within the resort grounds.

As your car circles, the front drive and the valet greet your party, you’ll feel swept away into the magical world of the rich and famous.  While  being one of the few five-star hotels in Colorado, you’ll find that one of their packages may be priced right for even the most budget-conscious traveler to be able to enjoy.

Broadmoor Hotel Entry Colorado Springs CO

(*A MUST STOP if you are over 21)
  • Ristorante Del Lago
  • Lake Terrace Dining Room
  • Golf Club Dining Room
  • Seven Falls Restaurant 1858
  • Mountain Club House

INSIDERS TIP! Instead of a sit-down breakfast, enjoy fabulous freshly baked breads and pastries, an excellent array of freshly brewed coffee and teas with free refills for hotel guests at the Espresso News. It’s located just south of the main desk and is a cozy spot to sit and plan your day and pick up any incidentals you may have forgotten as well as magazines and small gifts.

Many packages are available at the Broadmoor including:

  • Golf Packages
  • Spa Packages
  • Holiday Packages
  • Romance Packages
  • Recreation Packages
  • Meeting Packages for the business travelers

With a beautiful clear lake at the center of the resort complete with resident swans and complimentary paddle boats surrounded by a walking path, comfy benches and a restaurant/bar adjoined to the main hotel along your way,  you’ll find you never need to leave the grounds of the resort.

In the summer visitors enjoy golf, tennis, hiking and sightseeing, while year-round activities include fly-fishing, horseback riding, rock climbing and ballooning.

The winter season in Colorado is sure to enchant guests with scrumptious cups of hot cocoa in front of one of the many huge fireplaces you’ll find both indoors and out throughout the complex,  a movie theater,  indoor pool, full-service spa, heated jacuzzi and one of the most spectacular winter holiday displays you’ve ever seen. The views from any window or walkways are simply breathtaking as is the drive to the local attractions.

Vacationers will find that a stay during any season at the Broadmoor will exceed their expectations.

Like to shop? Don’t worry, the Broadmoor is complete with specialty shops both in the main hotel, and sprinkled throughout the grounds specializing in designer clothing, gift boutiques, art galleries, florists, a bookstore, children’s shops and Colorado collectibles.

Other fun shopping outings include:

Manitou Springs – Boutique shops built into the side of the mountains include: restaurants, bars, gift shops, artisan demonstrations and Olde Tyme Photography.

Old Colorado City – A grouping of original Victorian houses and shops with an emphasis on Colorado made arts and crafts, local food, antiques and gift shops.

Whether you are a Colorado native, new to the area or plan to visit, the Broadmoor Hotel is a destination that deserves a spot on your must-see bucket list.

Dog-Friendly Lodging

Dogs allowed but not really Friendly to your dog. Can’t leave home without your four-legged child? No problem at the Broadmoor. Your pooch is welcome here and will be housed in the lap of luxury with his own dog bed, bowls, treats and beautiful scenic walk for you to take Fido on. The only place you can’t take your pets is where they serve food. – Update… I can’t really recommend this as Dog-Friendly, there are no dog-friendly places you can eat, no places to let your dog run and if your dog barks while you are gone you could have to pay a large fine.

Recommended things to do while you are in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Royal Gorge Dinner Train ads engineer rides & new menu

November 1, 2015 By Chrissy

Colorado’s Royal Gorge Route Railroad is open

The train leads your through the winding 1,000-foot deep canyon by a newer, turbo-charged GP40-2 diesel-electric locomotive, which offers greater fuel economy and efficiencies, and gives you amazing views of the famed Royal Gorge including the view from below the worlds highest suspension bridge.

Ride up front with the Train Engineer

royal gorge dinner train canon city colorado

For passengers, the biggest boon will be the new locomotive’s ability to accommodate up to two passengers for private cab rides seated right beside the engineer, where they’ll experience a unique view of the Royal Gorge as the train travels to Parkdale. The view of the Royal Gorge Bridge from thousands of feet below it is a site you won’t soon forget.

“Cab rides are one of the most coveted and memorable experiences for train lovers of all ages,” said Kaverman. “This also offers an incredible experience to those who appreciate the scenic beauty of the Royal Gorge – there is no other vantage point in the train quite like the cab.” Prices for cab rides are $150 for one or $250 for two passengers in the same party.

This year, the privately owned Royal Gorge Route also will enhance its first-class lunch and dinner menus, and its wine offerings.

“The Royal Gorge Route offers the best dining by rail experience in North America,” said Kaverman. “There are few trains on this side of the Atlantic that do dining to the level we do.”

This year’s new first-class lunch and dinner menus bring quinoa to the plate, Colorado-raised chicken and more local, national and international wine offerings and pairings.

We got to experience the dinner train in late November and were completely surprised by how wonderful the food was. Large portions, tasty recipes and nice pours on the wine. It’s on the “must do” list for the Colorado Springs area.

We recommend combining the dinner train with a tour of the the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. The staff in the tasting room is wonderful and you’ll be able to sample their wines and shop for some unique wine centered gifts as well.  The Colorado Cab Franc is our favorite! For the more family friendly day trip you should definitely add a trip to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park.
