Mardi Gras Celebration coming to Parker in 2023

January 25, 2023 By Chrissy

Mardi Gras also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

February marks the start of Mardi Gras celebrations nationwide and the Infamous “Fat Tuesday” falls early this month.

Support arts, science, and culture while experiencing the excitement of Bourbon Street!

Laissez les bons temps rouler! The Council of Arts, Science & Culture (CASC), a 501c3 nonprofit organization, throws the greatest Mardi Gras celebration south of Denver! Trade in your business suit for your best Mardi Gras costume, or your favorite attire, as we bring on the New Orleans magic!

Your ticket includes Cajun-style delectables, live music, and dancing. Coming 2023

Why is Mardi Gras Celebrated?

Why do they Throw Beads?

Mardi Gras parades began in New Orleans in the 1830s and during that time, inexpensive necklaces made of glass beads were popular and parade krewes began to be tossing them into the crowds. The beads were an instant hit among the crowds of New Orleans residents and visiting Mardi Gras tourists and that tradition continues today.

Fundraiser for Movie Theater Shooting Victim Aug. 22 at Swirls of Parker

August 20, 2012 By Chrissy

Swirls Frozen Yogurt Shop parker coAshley Moser and Veronica Moser-Sullivan were a mother and daughter who always had a smile and hug to give and whose love was apparent in the way they spoke and looked at each other.   Tragically, on July 20, 2012, Veronica’s life was cut short when a gunman entered a movie theater and opened fire. She was only 6 years old.

Ashley sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is still in the hospital recovering. In addition to grieving for her daughter, she faces a long road to recovery and mounting medical bills. The 25-year old is lucky to have a large and strong family support system, but it won’t be enough for the challenges she now faces.

In an effort to help this family financially, Swirls of Parker is proud to be holding a fundraiser in honor of Ashley Moser on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m.  Located in Parker at 19751 Mainstreet, 20 percent of the evening’s sales will go to Ashley’s fund.

Please contact Kindle Morell at cousins@helpash.org with media questions or for additional information.  For updates on fundraising efforts, check www.HelpAsh.org or #HelpAsh on Twitter.

June 12, 2012 By Chrissy

dumb friends league harmony equine center

Whether by car, truck or horse and buggy, horse lovers and admirers are invited to attend the official open house and adoption day at the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center near Franktown, Colorado.

The open house and adoption day will take place on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the equine center located at 5530 E. Highway 86, just west of Franktown.

Dumb Friends League Equine Center Open House

“We’ll have made many changes from the time the League announced the opening of the Center back in March to what you’ll see at the open house,” said Duane Adams, vice president of field and equine services. “Our third barn will be completed, and out new training classroom is going to be well under way.”

Visitors will be able to take a guided tour, enjoy food and refreshments and see horses available for adoption. No RSVP is required. After June 16, the Harmony Equine Center will have adoption days every Saturday, except on major holidays.

“We want the public to be able to see what we are doing, not only to help the horses in our care, but to spread the word that there is a real need for this facility in Colorado,” said Adams. “The Center is supported entirely through donations.”

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center is not a sanctuary or a rescue facility. The Center does not accept owner-relinquished horses.

It is for horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules that have been removed from owners’ care by law enforcement authorities.

To learn more about the Harmony Equine Center or to see horses available for adoption, visit ddfl.org/equine or call (303) 751-5772.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Fundraiser for Childhood Cancer

June 6, 2012 By Chrissy

A Lemonade Stand happening this Friday  in Clark Farms as a fundraiser for childhood cancer

Alex’s Lemonade Stand – June 7, 2013, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

alexs lemonade stand is parker's cash mob june 2012

It’s not just ANY lemonade stand, this one is a nationwide effort to raise money for childhood cancer hosted by a local young man… Michael Loomer.

The actual lemonade stand will be held at:

Jola Park (MAP)
Near the corner of Clarke Farms Drive & Motsenbocker Road
Parker, CO 80134

You can also donate online here.

“Hosting a fundraising lemonade stand was the inspired idea of ALSF founder Alexandra “Alex” Scott. True to the spirit of the phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” Alex, at age four, held a lemonade stand to help find a cure for all childhood cancers, including her own. Since that time, more than 20,000 Alex’s Lemonade Stands have been held across the country!”

Feel Good Fundraiser June 2013

Either in person and in cash or online, let’s help Michael get to and surpass his goal of $2,500 this year.

You can also donate by Texting Lemonade 111132 to 85944 to make a $10 donation directly to Michael’s stand. Raising awareness and finding a cure for childhood cancer are very important to the Loomer family!

Michael Loomer’s Story

michael loomer cash mob lemonade stand

Many of you know that Michael was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an aggressive and rare childhood cancer, in November 2003 at the tender age of 2 1/2. He was so brave and continues to be brave for others. Today he continues to amaze us with his care and concern for others and his strength. Thankfully Michael’s prognosis was excellent and today he is cancer-free; however, the sad truth is that this is not the case for many children who are diagnosed with childhood cancers. This is why we have chosen to have a lemonade stand again this year to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Alex’s Lemonade Stand is committed to raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer causes, primarily research into new cures and treatments.

Read more of his story on the Lemonade Stand website here.

Memorial fund and service for Donna Royer’s kids in Parker Colorado

December 31, 2011 By Chrissy

Donna Royer victim of violent shooting domestic violence parker colorado
This photo was taken by Donna’s niece and is on Facebook.

Immediately after the tragic shooting in Parker, not one but several funds were set up for Donna Marie’s two daughters. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund for the Royer kids can go into any Wells Fargo branch and donate by cash or check in any amount. The manager of the Parker and Mainstreet branch assured us that the tellers can pull up all of the accounts for you to choose from to donate.

Steve Alter the previous owner of Tailgate Tavern kicked off one of the funds with a $300 donation yesterday when he opened the bar and has donation buckets available for anyone who wants to stop by or who can’t get to the bank during their regular hour.

If there are other individuals or businesses who are going above and beyond the call please feel free to leave that information in the comment section below this article.

Last night at the PACE Center, a memorial service was held for Donna Marie. It was SRO. Why is Parker a great place to live? What is a home-town feel? Wells Fargo, Warhorse, Parker Task Force, Target, and great citizens just to name a few of the many who have come together and came together last evening to give to Donna Marie’s girls. We laughed, cried, shared stories, hugged, supported each other and, especially, the girls. What tremendous young ladies they are. What great people we have in Parker. I, for one, am lucky to be here. May God bless Donna Marie and her children.
