SEPTEMBER 10-12, 2021

Held annually the weekend after Labor Day, Estes Park’s Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival is the largest gathering of its kind between the Mississippi River and California, and traditionally hosts bands – from the marching kind to the rocking kind and everything in-between – hailing from Great Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and, of course, the United States.

With jousting knights, dancing girls, hoisting athletes and calling bagpipes, groups and families of all ages will catch the Celtic spirit at this festival – surrounded by the scenic peaks of Estes Park!

One of the weekend highlights is the free hour-long parade on Elkhorn Avenue, Estes Park’s main street. Bagpipes, drummers, dancers, clans in tartan, Dogs of the British Isles, brass military bands and precision drill teams give a preview of what can be seen on the festival grounds.

2021 FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES:

Music & Entertainment

Mixing flora with the artist’s signature motifs two series of prints, FlorDalí and Surrealist Flowers, underscore Dalí’s ongoing infatuation with his native landscape of Catalonia and the intriguing images of his Surrealist works. The images of fruits and flowers unsettle what we think we know about reality by juxtaposing seemingly incongruent elements. The exhibition of nearly 40 works is organized by Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and The Dalí Museum.

DALE CHIHULY EXHIBIT

As the Chihuly exhibition comes to a close at Denver Botanic Gardens (on view through November 30), we are pleased to announce – through the generosity of private donors including Robert and Judi Newman and the RC Kemper Charitable Trust, UMB Bank, n.a., Trustee – a Chihuly work of art will be added to the Gardens’ permanent collection. The new work, part of the Tower series, will be installed in the Ellipse garden and called “Colorado.” It will be comprised of approximately 700 hand-blown glass elements and stand over 11 feet tall.

Brian Vogt, Denver Botanic Gardens CEO says, “We will never forget this extraordinary year and the outpouring of enthusiasm for the combination of Chihulyand the Gardens. Now, we will have the opportunity to relive this unique and dynamic fusion long into the future.”

I am so pleased that a significant work of art will be added to Denver BotanicGardens’ permanent collection,” says artist Dale Chihuly. “It is such a beautiful garden and such a great city – my thanks to Brian Vogt for helping make the exhibition such a success and to the donors for their generosity and the honor of this permanent installation.”

Dale Chihuly

Donors share enthusiasm for the gift. Robert and Judi Newman say, “We are thrilled and honored to provide the lead gift for the legacy piece which will commemorate theGardens’ monumental and stunning Chihuly exhibition. Dale Chihuly’s work easily transforms any space and engages viewers in unique ways that merge science and art. We love it!”

The Kemper family has a long history with the Gardens and Dale Chihuly. Mariner Kemper, Chairman and CEO, UMB Financial Corporation says, “It was only natural for us to help bring a permanent Chihuly artwork to the Gardens. Giving back to the community and supporting the arts has always been a focus for our family and we hope the citizens of Denver enjoy the piece for years to come.”

Chihuly used a red, orange and yellow color pallet as it reminded him of the beautiful skies and sunsets he has enjoyed during his visits to Denver. He drew inspiration for this new work from one of his most challenging outdoor installations, Icicle Creek Chandelier, a permanent outdoor installation he did in 1996 at Sleeping Lady Resort in Leavenworth, Washington. Installed on a granite rock, the chandelier is a permanent reminder of how a work of art can be framed in nature and find harmony within in it. Like Icicle Creek Chandelier, “Colorado” will be designed to sustain similar outdoor weather conditions.

ABOUT DALE CHIHULY

Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. After graduating in 1965, Chihuly enrolled in the first glass program in the country, at the University of Wisconsin. He continued studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he later established the glass program and taught for more than a decade.

In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, he went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice, Italy. There he observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works today. In 1971, Chihuly cofounded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. With this international glass center, Chihuly has led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art.

His work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. He has been the recipient of many awards, including 12 honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Denver Center for the Performing Arts Schedule

April 8, 2021 By Chrissy

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts houses several different venues and sizes of performance space.

The largest is Buell Theater where the headline shows like “Wicked,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Hamlet,” and “Rock of Ages” and “Miss Saigon” are performed, The Helen Bonfils Theater normally houses smaller offerings with the Garner Galleria hosting small cast shows with an intimate dinner theater setting. The Ellie Caulkins is somewhere in between. Drinks and snacks are sold at the theater and are allowed inside.  For the best seating options, we suggest becoming a subscriber. You can pay in monthly installments so it’s affordable and you get first chances at shows that sell out immediately. You can explore the various packages here. We can truly say we’ve never had a bad time at any production put on by the DCPA. The onsite parking is reasonable at $15 and is right next to the theaters. For a fun weekend check out “The Curtis” hotel, our favorite and visit Sam’s #3 for a Comfort Food Breakfast, lunch and dinner and check out our list of favorite brunch spots for the morning after.

HAMILTON

  • Returning 2022

Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now. With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

MEAN GIRLS

  • expected in 2022
  • Buell Theatre

Direct from Broadway, Mean Girls is the hilarious hit musical from an award-winning creative team, including book writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), composer Jeff Richmond (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. New York Magazine cheers,“Mean Girls delivers with immense energy, a wicked sense of humor and joyful inside-jokery.” USA Today says, “We’ll let you in on a little secret, because we’re such good friends: Get your tickets now!”

MY FAIR LADY

  • 2022
  • Buell Theatre

From Lincoln Center Theater that brought you The King & I and South Pacific, comes “a sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time” (Entertainment Weekly), Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady. Director Bartlett Sher’s glowing production is “thrilling, glorious and better than it ever was” (The New York Times). “Every so often a revival comes along that reminds you how indispensable great theater can be” (NY1). Boasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “On the Street Where You Live,” My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed?

Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival on the Pearl Street Mall

Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival

TBD| PEARL STREET MALL

Spring officially arrives in Downtown Boulder when the vibrant Tulip Fairy, along with pint-sized fairies and elves, parade around the Pearl Street Mall ‘welcoming the tulips’. This beloved springtime tradition features special events and activities for girls and boys and celebrate the more than 15,000 tulips that adorn the world renowned Pearl Street Mall throughout the spring season. The event includes live stage performances, face painting, free activities for children and more!

Our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted in one way or another by COVID-19.  Of utmost importance is the health and safety of you, friends, family, co-workers, and the communities in which we live, work and visit.

As we look to our 2021 events season, we will be strictly following the guidelines of our partners at the City of Boulder and Boulder County Public Health to determine the safest course of action.  While we hope this will include limited in-person events for our community, we are prepared to continue postponing our events should it continue to be deemed unsafe for large groups to gather.

We plan to offer some virtual and socially distant activities for families and children for our Tulip Fairy & Elf celebration this year for the entire month of April.  Please check back for additional details!
