January 25, 2023 By Chrissy

Mardi Gras also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

February marks the start of Mardi Gras celebrations nationwide and the Infamous “Fat Tuesday” falls early this month.

Parker Mardi Gras
Coming 2023

Why is Mardi Gras Celebrated?

Why do they Throw Beads?

Mardi Gras parades began in New Orleans in the 1830s and during that time, inexpensive necklaces made of glass beads were popular and parade krewes began to be tossing them into the crowds. The beads were an instant hit among the crowds of New Orleans residents and visiting Mardi Gras tourists and that tradition continues today.

Douglas County Household Chemical Roundup

January 4, 2023 By Chrissy

Household Pickup for Hazardous Waste

In place of a one-time annual event, the Douglas County Health Department is partnering with Waste Management to provide Douglas County residents with a low-cost household service for hazardous waste removal year-round. Get details and sign up for your household pick-up at Waste Management’s website. The cost is $30 for Douglas County residents.

Safe Storage
It is important to read the product labels to safely store, use, and dispose of chemicals. When these chemicals are not used up entirely, they become household chemical waste. Find safe handling tips by visiting the EPA’s Household Hazardous Waste webpage.

Toxic household products can be harmful to pets, wildlife, sanitation workers, our health and the environment if poured down the drain, toilet or storm sewer, or placed in the trash. If you’ve recently painted your house, changing your car’s oil or spruced up your lawn, proper disposal of the related hazardous materials will keep your family and our community safe.

Dispose of and recycle toxic household products from your home year-round with the Douglas County Health Department’s new Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program! This low-cost service for hazardous waste removal is a partnership with Waste Management and replaces the former Household Chemical Roundup events previously offered through the Tri-County Health Department.

Douglas County residents are eligible for one household pick-up appointment per calendar year. Please note, a $30 co-payment is a requirement from residents for each appointment.

Recycling Parker Colorado 2011-2012

Many common products found in the home may be hazardous and should be used and disposed of carefully. These include motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, solvents, house and garden chemicals, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), fire extinguishers, items containing mercury, propane tanks, paint, and passenger vehicle and pickup truck tires (off the rim). Proper disposal at the Roundup helps prevent the potential of accidental poisonings and fire hazards in the home.

Residents just drive up and volunteers will unload the materials. Douglas County participants should bring proof of residency such as a driver’s license or utility bill and $25 per vehicle to offset the high cost of hazardous waste disposal. Residents are encouraged to register in advance online at www.tchd.org/hcroundup.

Free Electronic Waste for Douglas County Residents

Douglas County residents may recycle their electronics for free and year-round through Dec. 30 at Techno Rescue, 3251 Lewiston Street, Suite 10 in Aurora, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on occasional Saturdays from 10 am. to 2 p.m.

  • Check-in at the Front Office and state the drop-off is for the Douglas County event
  • Proof of Residency will be required (photo id and verification of address such as driver’s license or state id)

Discovery Park Honored for Downtown Excellence

The Town of Parker’s Discovery Park has been honored by the non-profit organization Downtown Colorado, Inc. with one of the organization’s 2018 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence.

Since 2003, the Governor’s Awards annually recognize outstanding projects and people in Colorado that demonstrate creativity in the face of enormous challenges, unlikely and enduring partnerships, and dedication to the community.

Discovery Park, which opened to the public in late 2016, was one of three projects honored in the Governor’s Awards’ “Best Use of Public Space” category. The 1.4-acre site in the heart of downtown Parker is a year-round destination park and community gathering space that features interactive fountains in the summer, a unique ice skating trail in the winter, and performances and events throughout the year. The ice trail is one of only a handful of such amenities in the country.

Also accompanying the park is the new Parker branch of Douglas County Libraries, the distinct “Ball and Jacks” public art installation that features larger-than-life sculptures inspired by the classic children’s game, and a four-acre future development site.

Each year, the Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence serve as a highlight for Downtown Colorado, Inc.’s IN THE GAME Vibrant Downtown Event, an annual conference for downtown champions, resources, and stewards. The honor celebrates the amazing projects and people that are committed to economic and community revitalization in Colorado. The 2018 IN THE GAME event will be held in Boulder on April 10 through 13, with the Governor’s Awards being presented on the conference’s final day.

For more information on Discovery Park, visit www.ParkerRec.com/DiscoveryPark or emailrecreation@parkeronline.org.

Our Gorgeous New Parker Library location opened on September 24, 2016

The beautifully appointed new building, located at 20105 East Mainstreet, is the last of DCL’s three new locations to open—capping a successful campaign to launch dynamic new libraries and services that enhance lifelong learning.

Parker Library Park girl reading book statue

With nearly 42,000 square feet of space on two stories, there’s something for everyone at this library. Kids can enjoy a dedicated area for interactive play and Storytimes, all library cardholders can play (or work) in the digital creativity lab, and students and professionals can collaborate in high-tech study rooms and meeting spaces. The lounge features café-style seating and laptop vending, and the adjacent learning commons offer adults and students the space to engage in diverse learning activities. The upstairs den with fireplace offers a quiet respite from the more well-traveled areas of the building.

Patrons will also enjoy the library’s drive-through book drop and increased parking—approximately 163 spaces at the building, with more accessibility in an adjoining park.

“The Parker community loves its library but hasn’t always loved how difficult it’s been to get in and out of. We designed the new building with them in mind, providing much more parking; easier browsing of materials; nearly triple the space to sit and stay awhile; and more study rooms, meeting rooms and event space,” Long says.

Douglas County Libraries is a passionate advocate for literacy and lifelong learning. For more information, visit DouglasCountyLibraries.org.

Taking charge of noxious weeds can help save your home from wildfires

March 16, 2022 By Chrissy

Did you know allowing noxious weeds to grow and spread on your property can be damaging to native flora and increase the risk of a wildfire spreading to your home? We saw in December just how quickly a wildfire can spread in a populated area. Do what you can to protect your property and family.

Join a free workshop April 16 to safeguard property and landscaping

Join land, vegetation, and wildfire experts to learn how to identify and eradicate these invasive plants during Douglas County’s Noxious Weed and Wildfire Prevention Workshop from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 16. The workshop is available online or in person.

At this free workshop, you’ll learn the role weeds play in the spread of wildfires in both suburban and rural areas, how to keep noxious weeds from taking over your landscape, and how to properly use herbicides and other techniques to control weeds on your property.

The workshop will be live-streamed — you may watch live on YouTube, or if you would like to ask questions during the event, participate remotely via WebEx. Attend in-person at the Philip S. Miller Building, 100 Third St. in Castle Rock. Registration is not required.

Douglas County has information for you about both noxious weeds and the vital role of wildfire mitigation online.

Todd Hendreks running for Parker Town Council 2020

September 11, 2020 By Chrissy

My name is Todd Hendreks and I am running for Town Council for the Town of Parker this Fall.

todd henrecks and family

Sixteen years ago, my wife and I moved to one of the best places in America to raise a family. With two children born here, we have embraced the Community with open arms. The Town has changed quite a bit since 2004, but we love it today as much as we did back then.

I am running for elected office not because I think Parker needs to be fixed. I am running because I feel it is a special place where I wish to maintain that special hometown feeling that still exists today and improve the quality of life not only for my family but yours and your neighbors.

In the coming weeks, you will learn more about me and what I have accomplished here in Parker.

Todd’s Accomplishments

  • You will learn I have spent countless hours volunteering and serving this Town because I feel compelled to help others and I truly enjoy it.
  • You will learn that I have immersed myself into the fabric of the Community.
  • You will learn I have taken the time to educate myself on Town matters for years, long before I even considered running for elected office.
  • You will learn that I am one of the few candidates that does not disappear between election cycles.
  • You will learn that I am well qualified to represent the 56,000+ citizens that live here.
Todd Henreks

Most importantly, you will learn how much I would be honored to represent the citizens of Parker if elected.

As an Unaffiliated candidate, my political tendencies are fiscally conservative and issues for me range from Conservative to Moderate. What it also means is that I have the capacity to listen, understand concerns from all over the spectrum and most of all be fair.

You may not like my stance on certain things, but I promise you I won’t say one thing to your face then say the exact opposite to a different audience.

My Platform / Vision for Parker is summarized here, but I will go in-depth for future discussion.

Todd Hendreks’ Platform

  • Diversify the Local Economy
  • Recharge Efforts for More Open Space
  • Engage Community on Growth
  • Focus on Improving Fiscal Responsibility
  • Improve Options for Parks & Recreation
  • Advocate for Small Business
  • Prioritize Town’s Infrastructure Needs

Want to help? Please share this post and get engaged in the conversation on my page. More information about my campaign can also be found at the links below.

Sincerely,
Todd Hendreks

Pumpkin Bisque with Pepitas and Cinnamon Cream-Recipe of the Month

November 3, 2015 By Chrissy

Our recipe this month comes from Chef Aaron at Pradera Country Club and it’s just in time for your winter holiday feasts.

Holiday Pumpkin Recipe

Since pumpkins come in all sizes, no specifics will be used for this recipe.  Instead, it will be a procedure recipe.  The sugars and flavorings can be mixed and matched for personal taste.

  • 1 pumpkin
  • Apple juice
  • Cream
  • Sugars:  white sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, dark corn syrup, caramel, etc.
  • Flavoring:  vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, cloves, ginger, etc.
  • Pepitas (a pepita is a pumpkin seed with the husk removed)
  • Cream
  • Ground cinnamon

Remove the seeds and the skin from a FRESH pumpkin.
Cut into small pieces, and place in a large pot.
Fill the pot with apple juice and cream until the pumpkin is covered.
Add any sugars and seasonings you’d like, and then simmer the mixture until pumpkin is very soft.
Puree in blender, with a hand mixer, or in a food processor.

Garnish soup with cream whipped with cinnamon and toasted pepitas.
